The District comprises of 10 agriculture divisions consisting of 57 mandals, with a Geographical area of 11,89,004 hectares. According to the 1991 population census, the total population of the district is 30.37 lakh. The density of the population being 257 for sq.km. with 37.17 literacy. As per 1991 censes total No. of cultivators in the district are 4.58 lakh which comes to 15.1 percent total to the population. The Agriculture laborers are 5.28 lakh, which is 17.39%.
The District has enormous potentiality for development of agricultural and industrial sectors. About 20% of the total geographical area is covered by forests with those in the Godavari basin being valuable source of teakwood and other forest produce endowed with natural resources, suitable soils and served to a maximum extent by Sri Ram Sagar Project. The District economy revolves around agriculture. Paddy, maize, Cotton, Turmeric, Groundnut and chillies are the important crops. There are as many as 250 Rice Mills, about 40 Cotton Ginning Mills, 223 godowns, one cold storage with capacity of 20 metric tons, 4 Pressing Units for value addition of the Agrl-produce. The main source of irrigation is Sri Ram Sagar Canal, tanks and about 2.50 Lakh Dugwells, agriculture is done in 5.50 Lakh Hectares. Singareni Collaries Godavarikhani, NTPC Ramagundam, Kesoram cement factory at Basanth Nagar and Nizam sugar factory at Muthyampet are some of the major industries located in the district.
